What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine views health as the state of Freedom and Joy. Read on to learn more.

What is joy?

Joy is a core component to health but is also a frequently misunderstood one.  The joy we are discussing is separate from the emotion we commonly know of as happiness. Happiness is a basic reaction of being pleased with our circumstances. Joy is a deeper feeling separate from happiness. It is a feeling of fulfillment in one’s life and connectedness to the universe.

For an example of a person lacking joy in their lives, we can see a person who feels they must struggle for everything.  They feel their life is pointless, and derive very little lasting satisfaction from anything.  They see the world as a terrible place, feel lonely and utterly separate from those around them and believe that nothing in their life goes well. Would we consider such a person healthy?

Compare that with a person who feels connected to the rest of the universe. This person feels life has meaning and purpose, and has an overall feeling of satisfaction and contentment, despite the minor ups and downs in their life. This person can be said to be truly joyful.

What is freedom?

Freedom is the ability to stay in the present moment. In his book “The Power of Now” Eckhart Tolle describes this state perfectly. In this state, one feels the human spectrum of emotions, from anger to happiness. These emotions however are transient, and when they are processed fully, they leave the consciousness of the person experiencing them.

An example is a person who experiences anger at a rude driver.  A healthy person may feel anger, but when the situation is done, the anger is done, and not carried forward with that person into further situations. An unhealthy person may carry this anger forward, and feel angry for days or even weeks over this incident.

Another example is someone who experiences grief following the ending of a relationship. A healthy person feels their grief fully, and in time releases it and moves on into a range of other emotions. An unhealthy person is unable to deal with grief and often continue to experience it for years or decades.

Regaining Health

Naturopathic Medicine views Health, or this state of freedom and joy as the natural state of human life. This state of health is not confined to the mind solely, but also extends to the physical body as well. What prevents us from living this state are things such as environmental toxicity, emotional trauma, poor diet and other factors.  Naturopathic Medicine utilizes a number of tools to bring a person back to their natural state of health.  Some of these tools are described below:

Clinical nutrition: The diet is an extremely important component to health, providing the fuel for the body. We may employ special diets, supplements and cooking methods in your therapeutic program.

Botanical Medicine: Herbs and their extracts are used to balance and strengthen the physical body.

Homeopathy: Homeopathy is the process of exploring a person’s deepest perceptions, and finding a substance in nature that matches those and is able to remove them.

Drainage: Drainage is the use of low levels plant and mineral extracts to stimulate the body to remove toxins and regenerate its cells. It is similar to detoxification, but is much gentler and more individualized.

Physical medicine: Physical medicine is the use of physical therapies, such as massage, exercise, spinal adjustments, and hydrotherapy

Acupuncture and Asian medicine: Use of herbs and acupuncture to direct the flow of energy within the body

Lifestyle Counselling: Disscussions regarding one’s life, emotions and activities are core for the therapeutic process.

Therapeutic Process:

The typical process of therapy for a patient regaining their freedom and joy is a gradual and progressive process, building up the gains a person has made. Therapy usually begins by improving a person’s diet and lifestyle, as well as addressing their immediate health problems through modalities such as drainage, herbs and acupuncture.

As a person’s immediate health problems begin to resolve, deeper issues emerge. The person may feel as if they are getting sick again, but in a slightly different way! This is actually a very healthy event, indicating that the patient is getting healthy enough to tackle issues that the body has lacked the strength to deal with so far. At this point deeper therapies such as single homeopathics and emotional remedies are used.

This process continues over time enabling a person to feel progressively more of their inherent freedom and joy. It is a beautiful process to behold and experience!
